791.5 Pekar 2005
Harvey Pekar
[Pekar] focuses on his childhood and young adult years. Teens will find much to empathize with, from his sense of alienation as a young Jewish boy in an increasingly African-American neighborhood to his struggle to find his place in the world. Pekar is his own worst enemy, finding discouragement in anything less than stunning success, berating himself, and quitting when things don't go exactly as he plans.

B Bechdel, A. 2006
Alison Bechdel
This book by Alison Bechdel is a darkly funny tale, illustrated with Bechdel's gothic drawings. I am a longtime fan of Bechdel and read this book in a single sitting. It deals with her own coming-out experience, as well as her father's closeted experiences and eventual suicide. Definitely intended for older teens and adults, but just as definitely a worthy story, well-told.

B Satrapi 2003
Marjane Satrapi
Satrapi's autobiography is a timely and timeless story of a young girl's life under the Islamic Revolution. Both this and the second voiume are excellent portraits of a childhood and adolescence lived in difficult times. One of Satrapi's great strengths as a storyteller is her ability to reexamine the same events from different perspectives, adding new depth to both the reader's and narrator's experiences with each addition of information.

A fun, fast read. Although the dialogue seems slightly forced at times, the action and atmosphere are always right on target. Appropriate for middle-schoolers and up.

Though I have only a basic knowledge of the Marvel universe, I have a weakness for "what-if" stories of all kinds. This one asks, "What if Marvel heroes, like the X-Men and Nick Fury, had lived in the 1600s?" The answer, written by Sandman creator Gaiman, involves witchcraft, weather-tampering, and some amazing wood-cut cover art.

Ranma and his father Genma had a little accident while training in the martial arts near some sacred springs in China. Now, whenever Genma is splashed with cold water, he turns into a panda. When Ranma gets a cold splashing, he turns into a girl! If you think that's confusing for him, imagine what's it's like for Akane--the girl he's been chosen to marry. Goofy fun that also slyly examines assumptions about what a girl or boy "should" be and do.

Another "what-if" story--in this one the question is "What if you and your friends found out that your parents were supervillains?" This suspenseful opening volume provides no easy answers and shows that motives matter as much as actions.
